EASY HOOKUPConnecting a laptop to a local-area network (LAN) just got a lot easier with the NetBeamIR from Hewlett-Packard (800 752-0900). The $289 device sits on a desktop and connects to an Ethernet LAN. Any Windows 95 laptop equipped with an infrared port--increasingly a standard item on notebooks--can attach to the network simply by coming within range of the NetBeam. Older laptops can communicate only at 115 kilobits per second, making work over the network sluggish. But newer units that comply with the latest Infrared Data Assn. standard can run at up to 4 megabits per second, giving you about as much speed as a wired connection. BY STEPHEN H. WILDSTROM
