Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- 85 years from conception to construction, New York City's Second Avenue subway is finally being built. When the first phase is completed in 2016, the 2-mile, $4.5 billion project is expected to carry 200,000 riders a day. Now, it's more like a landscape on Mars. Bloomberg's Rachel Crane descended 11 stories underground to see where explosives, tunnel boring machines, hoisters and 1,000 workers a day are carving out the city's first new subway line in more than 50 years.
