Virginia AG Drops Defense of Gay Marriage Ban Play

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Virgina Attorney General Mark Herring speaks at a news conference about his decision to not defend the commonwealth's ban on gay marriage and seek to have the law declared unconstitutional. Herring is at least the fourth Democrat nationally to refuse to defend such a law. A lawyer for Herring filed papers Jan. 21 in federal court in Norfolk ending his office’s role as lead defender of Virgina’s constitutional ban and statutory prohibition on same-sex marriage.
