Patients at Risk as Cardiac Stent Overuse Persists Play

Sept. 26 (Bloomberg) -- 7 million Americans have had stents implanted in their arteries in the last decade at a cost of more than $110 billion. Acute life-or-death cases account for about half of the 700,000 Americans who get stents annually. Among the other half, elective-surgery patients in stable condition, a Bloomberg News investigation found that death, injury and outright fraud accompanied the acceptance of the devices as a go-to treatment.
