Iraq Vet Returns as Addict, a Military Problem Play

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Nira Williams became addicted to painkillers and other drugs while serving the U.S. Army in Iraq. Discharged without benefits, the 25-year-old faced homelessness on the streets of Phoenix. Williams is a casualty of a surge in substance abuse in the armed services that a Pentagon-commissioned report described as serious enough to constitute a "public health crisis."
