AIDS Activists, Researchers Gather in Washington
July 26 (Bloomberg) -- More than 20,000 AIDS activists and researchers gathered this week in Washington for the International AIDS Conference. It was the first time the meeting, the largest of its kind, has been held in the U.S. in 22 years.
Activists at the meeting called on President Obama to increase funding for global AIDS programs and lift a U.S. travel ban on sex workers and intravenous drug users, two groups heavily impacted by HIV who weren't able to attend the conference. Groups also pushed to raise awareness about condom use, end criminalization of sex work, and decrease discrimination of those infected with the virus. (Source: Bloomberg)
