U.S. Seeks `Shrapnel Shorts' to Shield Troops Play

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. military wants to buy more “ballistic” underwear to protect soldiers from what has become a signature wound of the Afghanistan war: genital injuries from hidden bombs. The rate of limb amputations and genitourinary injuries increased to a record level following last year’s surge of 30,000 forces into Afghanistan, as more troops on foot patrols were hit by buried explosives, according to the Defense Department.
