VMWare is definitely one of the pioneers in Virtualization. Played a tremendous role in converting physical computing resources to virtualized resource.
Now from virtualization to cloud computing, VMWare needs to do a lot to maintain the lead it has generated in the past.
But, is it by becoming a PaaS provider?
SpringSource may mean that.

My guess is that they want to be able to run Java directly under Vmware. ie - no windows.

Running application directly under the hypervisior (with micro tailored OSes) was in VMware's vision for a long time.

Sun has been doing somthing like this with Java "GuestVM" -
http://research.sun.com/projects/guestvm

But they did it on Xen :)
