Happy Birthday, App Store!

Posted by: Olga Kharif on July 10, 2009

On July 11, Apple’s App Store hits another milestone: It turns one year old. In just 12 months, the store has managed to accumulate a catalogue of more than 50,000 applications, ranging from games to e-books. To date, consumers have downloaded more than one billion apps onto their iPhones and iPod touches. Along the way, Apple changed the way we use smartphones, and has forced companies like Research In Motion and Google to open their own, rival app stores, too.

To celebrate App Store’s anniversary, let’s make a list of the best iPhone apps. Here are some of Apple’s favorite apps. What’s your favorite app and why?

Also, what do you like about the App Store, and what would you like to see changed?

Just out a few days ago,is Gratitude Rock-Journal/Diary of Positive Thoughts. Along with providing a way to record thoughts and feelings on a daily basis, the app allows adding up to three pictures a day that tie in with thoughts and feelings of that day. The Lifestyle category app already has made to the top 100 list.

The App Store is astounding and I have too many favorites to list, but here are a few.
Shazam continues to amaze me with its ability to correctly identify almost any song played on the radio with just a snippet.
The GPS navigation function built into Google maps on the iPhone is handy and accurate.
RepairPal has saved me money and anxiety more than once when I needed to have my car fixed.
MyLite Flashlight is surprisingly handy (for me at least)
