Warner Archive Collection: Really Bare Bones

Posted by: Stephen Wildstrom on March 31, 2009

In a recent article about Warner Brothers Home Entertainment’s new manufactured-on-demand DVDs of classic films, I said they were bare bones, lacking extras such as outtakes or commentaries. But a reader has pointed out to me, and Warner has confirmed, that they lack something more important to a number of potential buyers: They have neither closed captions nor subtitles. This is unfortunate, because it makes this otherwise worthy effort inaccessible to customers who rely on captions or titles.

I just received (April 6) my order of two DVD titles from Warner Archive, and neither would play on my DVD player or my Mac. Both were defective, which suggests that Warner Archive has non-existent quality control in its manufacturing of these disks. I have requested a full refund. It's particularly disappointing, as Warner Archive is making available dozens of classic movie titles that aren't available elsewhere. I hope someone in the company wakes up and does something about this.
