iPhone Crushing iTunes Store?

Posted by: Stephen Wildstrom on July 11, 2008

It looks like the first-day demand for the iPhone 3G may have brought down a critical part of the iTunes Store. After you get an activated iPhone, you still must synch it with iTunes before you can use it.

itunes.gif

My attempt to do the initial sync on both a Mac and a Windows machine failed. Windows reported a timeout error trying to connect to the iTunes store, while the Mac just sat there forever saying “Connecting to iTunes Store.”

An attempt to sync an iPod Touch generated the error message above.

I’ve reported the problem to Apple and they’re checking it out. I’ll update when there’s news.

Same thing here for me with an iTouch, although now I no longer get the option to upgrade, it went back to saying v1.1 is the current version.

After waiting inline for 3 hours, I got the last one at my local AT&T store. Number ported instantly, but can't unbrick the phone. Apple FAIL!

Confirmed on the West Coast, connection timing out after I upgraded to 2.0. Can't use my phone.

Makes the professional world real happy.

July 11, 2008 11:56 AM

Same thing. Just bought the phone here in SF, they couldn't get it activated in the store and I'm getting the same warning message on my home PC when I try to connect to the iTunes Store.

Berto

July 11, 2008 11:56 AM

I had it and so did 2 other people I talked to. It's most likely just because of the incredible demand right now. Even the computers in the ATT store were overloaded.

They'll have it fixed, its just that too many people are trying to access it. Time is of the essence!

I've just tried updating my iPhone to version 2.0 through iTunes in UK and keep getting the -4 error. My iPhone is now totally unusable and will only make emergency calls!

This is the worst Apple software update ever! I bet even Microsoft could have done been. Shame on you Apple!

G Miller

July 11, 2008 11:59 AM

I have the same problem but in my case it's after I downloaded the iPhone 2.0 software to my 1st generation iphone. Not sure what to do, except to wait until the boys in Cupertino get it back online.

Jessica

July 11, 2008 11:59 AM

Ditto. I have the original phone and had to restore after trying out the new .ME. iDisk will not sync. iTunes is giving me multiple errors. AND my phone is now inoperable. What a mess.

Dimitri

July 11, 2008 11:59 AM

Apple should have released the 2.0 SW with the iTunes 7.7 release. This way, all the EXISTING iPhone owners could have upgraded (and most importantly ,re-activated the phone through the itunes store) BEFORE the MAD CRUSH of people trying to activate the 3G phones.

Now I've got a brick until the iTunes store has the gumption to handle the requests.

Just plain stupid Apple is sometimes.

Taylor

July 11, 2008 12:00 PM

Me too, except the error says something about the server timing out. Now I'm stuck at work, trying to update, and my phone will only dial out to emergency numbers. How am I going to survive until I get home without being able to text or play with the new apps????

July 11, 2008 12:08 PM

Good thing I didnt stand in line for 4 hours - or better yet camp out. Instead I downloaded the 2.0 update and got a nice bricked phone. WTH?

Bill O

July 11, 2008 12:10 PM

Had a good working iPhone (V1.1.4) before he morning update - with a healthy percentage of 6 million users needing the 2.0 software, I should have waited, knowing that's a record demand on any download/update process. 20/20 hindsight: Apple should have sequenced the new activation vs. updates for old phones.

In the meantime, we'll all have to wait for Jobs to get this dream unlocked at the iTunes store. Phone support was 45 minutes on-hold, then an automatic transfer to a ringing phone that's been ringing now for 30 minutes... and counting Anyone sweating in tech support?

Jim

Even worse, if you try to update your current iphone (old version) it will become useless bc you need to log on to itunes to unlock it after updating to the new OS...only to get network timeout! now i have no phone!

Jeff

July 11, 2008 12:12 PM

Part of the problem is that you have all of the original iPhone people upgrading to version 2 and it goes through a similar activation process through iTunes.

I am going out of town today and just bricked my phone. I got the entire 2.0 download and it couldnt finish the install because of timing out to itunes network. All the hype leading up to this event and they couldnt predict the network load and prepare for it. This is I.T. dropping the ball big time. Hey Apple hire the xbox live guys to teach you how to run a network.

I downloaded iTunes 7.7 last night and did a restore on my iPodTouch to 1.1.4. This morning I tried to connect and get the 2.0 firmware and the iPod Touch doesn't show up in iTunes. The 3G does, but have same issues as the ones above.

July 11, 2008 12:26 PM

I thought Apple had their act together, but this should be embarrassing for them - they know exactly how many phones they've sold and therefore the capacity that they will need to accommodate today. I'm leaving town in a few minutes, and it looks like Apple has disabled my phone for me.

Remember that Mac ad from 1984? Watch it again...as a mac user for 15 years, I'm starting to feel a lot more like the guys in gray.

another dead uk iphone here too. I forgot about the launch, connected my 1st gen iphone this afternoon and it started an auto update, failed and now I can't restore, even to version 1.1.4

I use my phone for business and this is NOT what I expected from Apple. I'm now charging my old phone to pop the simcard in so at least I can receive calls

Steven

July 11, 2008 12:27 PM

Same here. At least I kept trying and trying until I got everything working EXCEPT my iPod function--though nothing reads in the "big" window in iTunes so I can't even get to my summary screen. At least I got an appointment at an Apple Store late tomorrow afternoon if I need it--but it's tough for me to get there!

Updated to 2.0, phone now says to connect to iTunes, but then I get a timed out error, "We could not complete your iTunes store request. The network connection timed out. Tried rebooting my computer, but still getting the same message... phone will only do emergency calls... great.

What a sweet way to treat your current and new customers Apple! You had to have known based on hype and demand that this would happen! I would think that you would have geared up for it! After standing in line for hours just to find out that the locations where I am only got 90 Iphones. They could have said something to the other 300 customers wasting their time in line to come back, or setting up some kind of system to swipe my Credit card and send it to me! Now the system is totally overloaded and I can't even make a call!! Good Job Apple!!

Brian B

Same as all above - i waited 1.5 hrs for my 3g in the rain in new york - got it home and got the server not responding error from itunes. At least it works as a phone for now..

Buzz

July 11, 2008 1:29 PM

Apple could have warned everyone - but they are business people - they know that in the end we will all be happy - and in the meantime - the news will report record demand for the iphone that crashed the servers - they then get to apologize and claim that they had no idea demand would be that great. Apple makes good products - but their manipulation of marketing in this manner feels a little mean-spirited to me today. How many loyal customers are continually connecting their Iphone hoping against hope that it can be activated. Apple earned some bad karma points today.

So what do we do? Just sit here continuously trying to sync our new phones we're all so excited to use but can't? When I got mine, the guy at AT&T said very few phones were getting cracked. So it looks like some are making it through but the system can't take everybody at once.

I mean, now that I know it's not just my crappy Vista machine, I feel lots better. But it still suck to not get to play with my new phone...

Anyone for some AOC?

Cupertino

July 11, 2008 1:46 PM

Everyone seems to be so critical of Apple. Perhaps you should cut them some slack. In order to be able to predict that there servers would be overwhelmed, they would have to know the number of iphones sold (about 6 million) the size of the update (about 300 MB), an approximation of the percentage of people who would be updating to 2.0 on the first day (say 20%) and the capacity of their servers.

Really, to expect Apple to be able to crunch such complex numbers is unfair. Now maybe if they had a scientific calculator they could do the math on an Iphone--oh, wait, there is a scientific calculator in 2.0 ... perhaps their server was down :(

andy

July 11, 2008 1:46 PM

trying to load the 2.0 software and dont work, you would think apple would have realised the demand and had something in place for the inevitable to happen, i feel or the ones whos iphones worked this morning with 1.1.4 and now cannot use the new 3g one as they cannot activate, come on apple sort it out and while your at it drop the ridiculous prices you charge for movies and tv programmes its a joke!!!!!!!

OH, I should say, I'm pissed off too. I waited for the iphoney and I'm trying to activate it.

Eric

July 11, 2008 1:52 PM

Apple underestimated the demand. It happens. Here's why they really suck: They could have prevented you from upgrading in the first place, know you would be able to activate. They knew, when I downloaded the new firmware that it would brick my phone and they let me do it anyway.

One bad Apple spoils the bunch!

Ha Ha Ha, exactly why does everyone seem to think that Apple cares about your iPhone problems. They have your money, are going to get more money from most of you, and there's nothing, absolutly nothing you can do about it.

I have never had an update problem with Windows Mobile device, no lockups, I install all the 3rd party apps I want, and the largest touchscreen phone is still the original iPaq, the iPhone is just a copy with cute icons. I have seen mindless followers before, but this takes the cake. BTW my iPhone cannot activate either, but no apple device will ever be more than a toy to play with for me. I purchased the iPhone $50 locked up restored it and I'm still laughing at all of you who spent 250+ for a toy. Apple IS NOT A SERIOUS COMPUTER COMPANY, and if it weren't for Microsoft, they would have gone out of business long ago.

Not to be rude, but if you are going to be sheep, stop complaining and follow blindly, there are other options, and no real professional would ever depend on an Apple product.

Good luck to all of you, but this is the 2nd time Apple did this to you, maybe you should rethink your position, after all this type of business practice is why Apple was going bankrupt to begin with.

Cheers

Until then I was hoping to at least play with the new software, but that is looking like a no go for now.

I'm getting the "unknown error occurred (-4)" in Winchester, VA.

Apple, we know your working on it, but we sure will be happy when you get it working again :)

I really hope media reports this fairly and lays all blame on Apple. Apple is so loved by media people that they rarely cop any bad press. But with DOW tanking 1% everday this stupid news may not make it on front pages.

what an absolute waste of time. The worst thing is over 18 months it costs £810 on a £45 contract. This is for a Supposed to be £99 phone to buy across the world. But where in the world can you buy one. Apple jokers

Laughing at "MS Convert" for being so anal. Lay back dude, don't be so angry. If only Microsoft had anything to offer that could possibly back up their servers. Yes, Apple should have taken better measures to prevent this, but damn, don't be such a hater.

July 11, 2008 2:26 PM

So what do we do? Just sit here continuously trying to sync our new phones we're all so excited to use but can't? When I got mine, the guy at AT&T said very few phones were getting cracked. So it looks like some are making it through but the system can't take everybody at once.

I mean, now that I know it's not just my crappy Vista machine, I feel lots better. But it still suck to not get to play with my new phone...

Anyone for some AOC?

Just upgraded to the 3g iphone and it wouldn't sync in the store so I went home to do it. Still can't sync to get contacts, etc. but the phone is working.

Don't worry it's a world wide issue, were in the UK and are having the same problems.

AT&T sent me to the store to replace my SIM card. HA!! Now I get the same response as before, but with a nice 1 gallon $5.00 trip to the store! Calls missed, appointments cancelled. Great for the working class! I know the phones at Apple and Microsoft work! To many issues!

Mine worked after about 3 hours. Works great, all it was cracked up to be. Show a little patience. It will be rewarded. MSconvert is simply wrong on every count. Talk about sheep. Talk about not having any update problems, it's because no one wants to use a windows mobile phone. That is what I laugh about.

July 11, 2008 2:37 PM

Does anyone comprehend the backend required by apple to run this show and support billions of people trying to activate at the same time? I'm afraid to say you've obviously got zero background in computing to not understand that there are always unknown variables that will occur with something NEW. How could apple possibly put such a stringent stress test in place? I guarantee they tested this as much as was possible... If you don't have a backup phone you can toss your sim into then you've learned your lesson.

I have same problem on 1st gen iphone. Why didn't Apple anticipate this amount of traffic? The phone is great, but I am getting a little tired of some of these issues. I use this phone for my business and I cannot do anything. I wonder if Apple or AT&T are going to compensate for lost time. I know I would have to compensate my customers if they had to wait for my company's services!!!!!

San Diego:

8:00 am PST.
No update...not updates..no updates...

8:45 am PST updates to iphone comes available.

It installed and then reboots.

9:00 am PST. I-Brick

Then 2.5 hours of (-9839 itunes errors).
What I nice brick.

Try to call Apple (yeh, right... I think they have a Microsoft Call Center manager in charge today). No rings at first then rings, then "all people are busy call back later" message.

11:30 am PST
Brick now becomes Iphone V2 but still get a -4 itunes errors. I guess if you keep trying over and over again you may get the packets of data you need.

Perhaps Apple should be more Dell servers? Or update windows server software the next time? At least they can poke fun of microsoft.

Now, because I have the vodka in the freezer waiting for my return from ATT and upgrading to the new phone I'll start my long wait to give them more money for the great service.

I hear Steve Jobs is asking Steve Ballmer to lead their Iphone V3 team.

And more fun.. go to me.com and click around. Nothing really happens other then it freezes up my firefox and I have to restart it. Cook feature.

Bet Jobs (and the executives) are at lunch with their phones they updated weeks ago thinking how great this rollout is while their 100000 sub managers hide all the issues.

Heck, time to use my VWware to boot up XP and see if I can access me.com or itunes.

And to think I'm about to head out for more fun and entertainment. All I have to say it ALL the vendors really suck at rollouts.

To many rollouts at the same time.
What where they thinking?

OK, I waited in line for 4 hours here in Nashville, TN. AT&T made me pay 399 for the iphone. LOng story short, I had the original iphone but dropped it in the toilet about a month ago. AT&T guy sold me a blackberry. I bought it and didn't like it. I returned it within 30 days. Today, they say I can't purchase it for 199.00 but need to pay 399.00 I was so pissed but wasn't leaving without that phone. The whole day has been ridiculous. They also tell me that I might have a phone working for 1-3 days depending on when itunes is back up... Worst experience ever.

Laughing back at Raaing.

Why would I be angry at your problems? Also, why would I hate Apple, without Apple, Microsoft with have been spilt up. I really, really want Apple to stay in business, no matter how many people have to be disappointed by their business practices.

And if you read the posts, all over the net, there are a lot of disappointed people today. But then again, the only bad publicity is no publicity.

They did it before, and now they have done it again and you can count on it happening in the future. I say, bad business practices, poor planning, or an outright lack of concern.

If you ask someone from Xerox, how they felt about Steve Jobs stealing the ideas of others, many might understand why you will never control or truly own your Apple product. A thief can never have or find honor in themselves or others.

I'm quite sure an obviously aware and superior individual like youself knows that the only reason, Microsoft does not produce every basic computer product you would ever need is the US government. It's the same reason they bailed Apple out of bankruptcy, they cannot have a monopoly. They had to maintain the illusion of there actually being competition. And Apples OS has only gained ground by having Microsoft products on them. Besides iTunes being needed for the iPhone/iPod, etc, what Apple applications are needed to use Windows to the fullest? None.

I wish you Good Luck with the whole Apple thing, but to intentionally attempt to confuse the issue with comments like you made does not do any justice to your intelligence or the intelligence of those who frequent these types of forums.

Thank you anyway for the insults, I appreciate the freedom, freedom of speech gives.

Ageeing with Raaing.

MS Convert needs to loosen up. As far as I'm concerned, this minor annoyance with the iPhone pales in comparison to what was that version of the operating system again.... ME or Vista? They were both about the same. Now lets talk about bad business practices, poor planning, or an outright lack of concern....

Just relax they are both companies out to make a buck. At the root of it all they are the same, driven by the dollar.

ROTFLMAO,

I have been here since the beginning and have seen all the OS'es fall. It's not an accident, and no one forced the world to use Windows.

You can brow beat that dead horse all you want, your bank, your transportation authorities, your government, and the majority of the planet uses windows. And the world is better off because of it.

But just like the O/S2 faithful, dumb terminal defenders, and those who swore the earth was flat, and the sun revolved around it, there will always be some who just want to hold on to a notion no matter what the facts state.

I SUPPORT INDIVIDUALITY AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE, so please keep up the good fight we all lose without options. Please, please, keep Apple alive and on the map, if Microsoft is divided we all lose.

Now if you guys could convince the major manufacturers to support these other OS'es (drivers and the like), it might actually be more fun. But unlike many individuals, they already see an end to the madness and no longer spend dollars to support these other products.

3.1,95/8/ME/NT/XP/2000/Vista, who cares which version of Windows it is, it was still Microsoft and Compaq that made it possible for all of us to have this interaction, by driving the home computer user market. No one else believed the people needed to have a computer at home.

Don't worry about it fellas, I loosened up when I was able to install DOS on my 5 MB MFM Hard Drive, what a BLAST!!! Freedom form diskette changes, faster program lauches, data access, OH MY. And then low and behold, 6 Diskettes changed the world, Windows!

I have every version of Windows ever made, almost every Apple system ever made, every version of SunOS/Solaris ever written, and every SparcStation ever made, Linux, Netware, O/S 2, OS/400, VMS, etc. I can't wait to see what technology is on the horizon.

I am having and have had a ball computing, but I only stand by the end user, because it's our money that makes them great(make that wealthy), and for the Billions of dollars spent, and will be spent, They could afford to get it right.

That said, I haven't done this (chat remotely) since I took my BBS down, this was fun! I might just be ready for blogging :-)

Have a great day!

Sharon

July 12, 2008 6:34 PM

I tried to install yesterday. After the install was completed and I went on to itunes I got the message that I required a new version of Apple Mobile Device Support. I had the newest version so I know that wasn't the problem. I called and spoke to an apple rep for 3 yes 3 hours and in the end he couldn't help me. He said it would take another 11/2 hours. I told him I would wait----Guess what? I got disconnected. I called and waited another hour and no rep came to the phone. This is a nightmare! I'm in worse shape than before I called. Now I can't even open itunes. Very upset. This was poorly planned!
