Blogger Arrests on the Rise

Posted by: Olga Kharif on June 18, 2008

A team of University of Washington researchers has just come out with a report on how many bloggers got arrested in the past five years for something they wrote about. Turns out, there was a sharp increase in blogger arrests last year.

The number of the arrests has blown my mind. Since 2003, a total of 64 people have been arrested. According to the study, “the majority of incidents took place in the Middle East and Asia with some in North America and Western Europe….. ” Egypt, China and Iran have lead the world in the number of blogger arrests. “The online texts we reviewed cited a variety of reasons for the arrests including refusal to give information to the government and violating rules unrelated to state security,” according to the study.

The researchers found that most people arrested were male, and under 45 years of age. The bloggers ended up spending and average of 15 months in jail. Alas, the study predicts that the number of blogger arrests will spike again this year.

Alert for Blogger ?! I don't think so. For so many netizen, this is the only space that they can "present" their existence. "I write, so I exist". Hopefully there willbe so many international class action about this evidence. Or if not, we all of blogger can write a post and spread this to the world !
