Why Did You Purchase an Unlocked iPhone?

Posted by: Olga Kharif on February 01, 2008

As we wrote recently, as many as 1 million iPhones may have been unlocked worldwide by the end of 2007. Consumers have snapped them up even though Apple voids warranty on unlocked devices. People have purchased unlocked iPhones even though the gadgets sell for as much as 70% above Apple’s list price. Reasons for that are, of course, numerous: Some people want to have the latest and greatest gadgets. Others discovered that the iPhone isn’t available from a carrier in their country.

What was your reason? And did you find it difficult to track an unlocked iPhone down? I’d love to hear from you! Please be sure to also drop me an e-mail at olga_kharif@businessweek.com.

Isn't an unlocked iPhone pretty much equivalent to an iPod Touch? But without the warranty and costing a whole lot more?

You haven't been paying much attention have you Ropenstein. If you unlock an iPhone, you can use it on any cell phone carrier. That means if you don't want to switch to AT&T, you can now still use the iPhone. That saves a lot of people a lot of hassle... especially those who do not like AT&T.

I will not go with go with AT&T. I have been with TMobil for over 6 years and have had superior support, no dropped calls, or any of the other problems AT&T users complain about. I can't imagine why Apple only put their phone with AT&T.

I really hate it when i hear people complain about AT&T and how apple made a bad choice to put the Iphone in their hands. Were i Live AT&T has the best network Coverage, even out beats that of Verizon, so stop Griping about AT&T and their Network Coverage, Everything other than AT&T and Verizon are useless around here, Absolutly no Support (not saying their bad) THe Iphone Rocks, No need to Unlock for ME AT&T al lthe way baby
