CES Dispatch--Bang & Olufsen's $55K TV

OK, if you have to ask the price, you should probably shouldn’t be shopping in Bang & Olufsen’s stores. And if you’re really on a budget, the company’s new BeoVision 4 plasma television without accompanying speakers will only set you back $7,500 for the 50-inch screen or $13,500 for the 65 incher.
But you’re sure to make a few neighbors jealous with B&O’s new Automatic Color Management system that self-adjusts the set’s color temperature every 100 hours of viewing. In a private demonstration Tuesday night, the TV envy was evident as a tiny mechanical arm with a camera eye at the end swung down from behind the top center of the aluminum frame to measure and test the on-screen picture.
It’s an interesting take on a common theme here at the Consumer Electronics Show of simplifying the consumer experience through technology enhancements.
Of course, with B&O, you must pay a lot for that goodwill. After adding in a new BeoLab 10 triangular center channel speaker and all the surround-sound equipment the company offers, your pockets will be $55,000 lighter. It’s the price you pay for glamor.
