New Cell Phone Display to Conserve Battery Power

Posted by: Olga Kharif on September 12, 2007

Like every other cell phone user out there, I often wish my phone battery would last longer. A start-up called Unipixel believes it can get us there: The company has developed a new approach to making phone displays, currently consuming a lion’s share of a device’s battery power.

The company will use standard Liquid Crystal (LED)display components but assemble them differently, so that, for example, instead of being lit from the back, the display will be lit from the sides. Such changes, turns out, can cut a display’s battery consumption by 60%, according to the story.

If the start-up’s technology works, we could enter an era of longer mobile phone battery life and more sophisticated, larger displays a la iPhone.
