Movie Downloads: Who Cares?

Posted by: Rob Hof on February 08, 2007

OK, so I cheered when Amazon.com and Tivo hooked up to offer movie downloads you can actually watch on your TV. But Charlie White at Gizmodo, in a post listing 10 reasons why movie downloads suck, is dead right: It’s going to be years before most people will be downloading movies, because the experience is just awful right now.

I don't think the experience is awful. But I don't own a TV. I gave it away after my boss bought me EyeTV. So I watch everything on my Macs - movie or TV from iTunes, streaming from network, cable via EyeTV, it's all the same to me.

Makes me wonder if a TV could be for the mega events like awards shows and Superbowls, and the rest, streamed in lesser pic quality. Similar to the way when you really want the full visual and audio effects, you shell out two grand for a movie theatre rather than waiting to buy or steal the DVD.

Right now downloadable videos place is on the digital players because it's the only way to get video on them.

Remember it was only a couple of years ago that the majority of Americans put a DVD player into their household. HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, "Downloadable Video" are all worthy media, but my mother-in-law is JUST getting used to DVDs and doesn't own an HDTV.

So we can continue to trumpet digital media, but until the public can easily accept it, arguing about business models at this time probably won't get us far either.
