CES: Where's the buzz?

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is jammed with attendees and traffic if gridlocked, both on the streets and in the aisles of the Las Vegas Convention Center and other show venues. Only one thing is in short supply: Interesting news. I must have had this conversation a dozen or more times at a reception last night: “Seen anything interesting.” “Not really.” “Me neither.”

After Panasonic made a splash with a 103-in. plasma display last year, it was hard to get very excited about this year’s bragging rights winner, a 108-in. LCD panel from Sharp. Microsoft tried to make a lot of news around Vista, but found hard going since the product has been in the hands of large customers since November.

For real excitement, the reporters and analysts in Vegas were looking to San Francisco,where Apple CEO Steve Jobs was poised to make a slew of product announcements at Mac World Expo Tuesday. Unlike many of my colleagues, I decided to to fly up north for the day, but I will be taking time out from CES and looking for a quiet corner of the convention center this afternoon to get briefed on what Jobs had to say.
