Marc Benioff, chief executive of Salesforce.com, has done a remarkable job of marketing his company and the software-as-service business model. But less known is his interest in philanthropy. Through the Salesforce.com Foundation, the company donates 1% of its equity and income, and its employees volunteer significant chunks of time, to worthy causes. Benioff wrote about this in his previous book, Compassionate Capitalism: How Corporations Can Make Doing Good an Integral Part of Doing Well. Now he’s back with another book on philanthropy, The Business of Changing the World. This one is a collection of essays on philanthropy by business and social leaders including Michael Dell, Craig Barrett of Intel, Steve Case of Revolution, and Laura Scher of Working Assets. Benioff’s goal, he says in an introductory essay, is to use these stories of corporate and individual giving to inspire other companies to do more and give more. Read it, and be inspired.
