The online virtual world Second Life just hit 1 million residents. That’s up from just 170,000 in late April, when my story about Second Life ran in BusinessWeek. As some cranky commenters on the Second Life blog post point out, the 1 million surely includes people with more than one account, employees of Second Life creator Linden Lab, and no small number of people who tried it and no longer visit. Nonetheless, it’s enough that all those newbies are now causing overcrowding of new-user landing sites and a slow performance “in-world.” Guess there are worse problems to have. And the 1 million figure finally got the New York Times to notice.
BusinessWeek writers Peter Burrows, Cliff Edwards, Steve Hamm, Rob Hof, Olga Kharif, Steve Wildstrom, Aaron Ricadela, and Spencer Ante dig behind the headlines to analyze what’s really happening throughout the world of technology. One of the first mainstream media tech blogs, Tech Beat covers everything from tech bellwethers like Apple, Google, and Intel and emerging new leaders such as Facebook to new technologies, trends, and controversies.
