Wireless Citizen Journalists

British wireless service provider 3 just launched a new service called “24 Hours.” The idea: Cell phone users can submit photos and videos they shot with their phone. Each submission costs a bit less than $1.

Each time your piece of content is downloaded by someone using “24 Hours,” you will get a few cents. So if you’d snapped a really hot celebrity photo, you could actually earn some money by selling it through that service.

Clearly, citizen journalism is expanding beyond online blogs and into wireless as well as TV (www.currentv.com uses content created by viewers). And now it looks like there might be a viable business model behind citizen journalism, too.

I am not sure people will make lots of money selling their content. More likely, telcos like 3 will make money off of charging for content submissions.

Cool idea, no doubt about it.

The method I choose for online purchasing is Amazon.com. For me, Amazon is trustworthy, reliable (merchandise has never arrived even one day later than promised, including the holidays); it has an exciting (to a chronic shopper), organized interface and content, including customer reviews of many products. I also appreciate their efficient tracking system for UPS, in which they even email you the UPS website link, which directly opens your specific order form (a password may still be necessary, I don't remember). I plan to subscribe to their prepaid shipping option, which gaurantees free shipping for the time period that it's valid. I believe the $79 annual fee pays off if you use Amazon frequently enough.

Occasionally, I do order by phone from certain catalogues or websites, such as Eddie Bauer or Crate & Barrel, if I have a specific question about the product and need assistance from a live person.
