Now I Know Why Ringtones Are a $500 Million Industry

… because the stock ringtones that come with the phones bite. I just got a new cellphone for the first time in a long time, and the one Verizon chose as the default is awful. So are just about all the rest of the choices. It’s embarrassing to answer a call.
So while I never thought I’d bother to buy a ringtone—yeah, yeah, I know, I’m way out of touch—I’m now in the market. I’m kind of intrigued by Xingtone, which sells software to let you make your own, but really, I’ve got a life to live. I do like its links to some sites with interesting ‘tones, such as World Music Ring Tones. They’ve got everything from an Egyptian wedding procession rhythm to an “Afro-Slavic groove” for $1.99 a pop, plus other “100% organic loop-free earth tones … to make your cell phone fit better into the natural cycles of your life.” Well, OK then.
Of course, if anyone has any ideas about where to get something good and free, I’m all ears.
