Apple's Shining, Counterintuitive Example

Nick Carr has an interesting take on what Apple’s blowout earnings yesterday mean. As he pointed out years ago, the common wisdom was that Apple couldn’t possibly match the research and development might of the entire Wintel computing platform, yet Apple has long managed to stay ahead on a wide range of technologies, from hardware design to software to online music retailing. “Innovativeness is by no means synonymous with business success, but Apple’s experience in recent years provides a fascinating case study,” Carr writes. “It underscores, above all, one important fact: Whatever lies at the heart of business creativity sure ain’t money.”
