Podcasting Off the 'Pod

Posted by: Rob Hof on June 21, 2005

A hint of where podcasting may be heading, at a Supernova 2005 panel: “I’ve been thinking for awhile that the future of podcasting is not on the ‘Pod but on the phone,” says Evan Williams of Odeo, a podcasting startup in San Francisco. “Audio is by nature a mobile thing—you can take it wherever you want.”

But will phonecasts be the end of podcasting as we know it? Amy Jo Kim of the online design consultant notes that people using phones tend to consume content of all kinds in short bursts, not the half-hour or hourlong wheezes of many podcasts. Don’t worry, quips Ev: “Everyone I’ve ever talked to thinks podcasts should be shorter, except the creators.”

Ya, they should all be shorter...but, can you imagine the garbage we'll have if there is absolutely no planning, just hit dial and record. A big share of it's garbage now even when planned.
