Mainly, it’s not a chess game, notes Yahoo!’s Jeremy Zawodny. All too often, we media folks fall victim to overdramatizing competition among companies—yes, even BusinessWeek. :-) No doubt that competition exists. But it’s reassuring, actually, to hear from someone on the inside that most folks developing products have their heads down, not craned over their shoulders. As one commenter on Zawodny’s post puts it: “You have to compete with yourself, you have to produce the best products you can make today and hope that nobody else can compete with YOU.”

I agree with Jeremy´s comment's. Looking to much at what the competition is doing isn't going to get you to where you want.

I believe the larger companies mentality of looking over their shoulders, is one reason why startups can be competitive, even with small resources.

It is when you lack a vision of your own, you start looking at competitors for ideas. But trying to pick a feature from competitor a, and one from competitor b, and integrating them in your own activity system is not easy, and many times confusing for your customers.

Many times startups are started just because the have a clear vision of where they want to go.
