New Generation of Search Sites to Threaten Google
Posted by: Olga Kharif on March 08
New search sites have been popping up left and right lately, seemingly with more frequency than during the Internet boom. This time around, though, these next-generation search sites are no simple keyword search sites. Nextaris.com is trying to mesh social networking tools with search. It allows users to search for information on a particular topic, then save it in their secure online folders or share them with friends.
Then, there's Become.com, launched by the same two guys who created MySimon.com. Become.com, which is currently in Beta, is attempting to be a better Froogle (or MySimon.com, for that matter), by offering not just price comparisions for various products but also photos, articles and product reviews. The site will be launched for real in April.
Other recent additions include blog search sites Technorati.com and Feedster.com. Even Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has financed a new search site in the past half a year.
Though these sites are seemingly coming into an already crowded search market, dominated by the likes of Google.com and Yahoo.com, there's still room, I think -- especially for sites that, like Nextaris.com, are trying to take search to the next level.
Google, beware!
