More on bloggers and libel

Posted by: Stephen Baker on March 7, 2005

Lots of response to Jessi Hempel’s commentary on bloggers and journalism. Dan Gillmor linked to the story and clarified that bloggers can in fact be sued for libel.

Hempel responds:

It wasn’t my intention to suggest bloggers can’t be held accountable in the same way. So far, bloggers haven’t often been lawsuit targets because most don’t have deep pockets. As I went on to write, blogger Lockhart Steele acknowledges that a lawsuit could bring down a blog like his, which runs on a scant budget, quite quickly.
