Following scattered rumors, AuctionBytes.com offers a bit of detail on Kijiji.com, which is a new network of classified ads that eBay quietly launched in six countries. The stated goal: to “bring back more of the ‘village’ feeling in our own communities.” Although none of the country sites, from Japan to Germany, is in English, it looks like there are few listings so far. But eBay has been steadily moving into classifieds with the purchase of Netherlands’ Marketplaats, Germany’s Mobile.de, the housing rental site Rent.com, and a 25% stake in Craigslist.
UPDATE: eBay fills in the holes…
eBay tells me that the site, which went live Feb. 28, is the first project to come out of a six-month-old New Ventures Group inside eBay. Spokesman Hani Durzy says Kijiji focused on the six countries--specifically 50 cities in Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy, China, and France--because eBay thought Craiglist has pretty much nailed the U.S. market. The special sauce that eBay hopes to bring, he says, is a sense of community that may be lacking in other local classifieds sites. (Kijiji means "village" in Swahili.)
Why bother with classifieds when eBay already has a global site for trading stuff? Because classifieds work better for services, such as finding housing and jobs, and exchange of large items like furniture that aren't shipped easily. Just don't expect much revenue anytime soon--especially since Kijiji isn't charging anything right now and Durzy won't say if and when it will. Durzy says Kijiji is planning to build each city's site by word-of-mouth, so they'll take awhile to build momentum. Even eBay wasn't built in a day.
Are there any competitors out there right now against Kijiji? How do they measure up?
Do you see this affecting offline channels in the short and long run? Very interesting article and it will be even more interesting how it unfolds within the next few years.
Thanks,
david
David, I'm not sure how many other sites like Kijiji are up and running internationally. I think most of them are specific to particular countries, so they're a little hard to track for an English-speaker like me. I'd love to hear from other folks out there more knowledgeable than I!
I do, however, see these and other sites affecting offline channels--already. By one study's estimate, San Francisco Bay Area newspapers alone have lost up to $65 million just to Craigslist's mostly free service.
As of today, in China, other than kijiji.com, there are currently about 50 major sites that run classified ads.
There are at least 5 sites that have more readership in this category than kijiji.
Apparently eBay is not putting much into China's kijiji. An ex-Microsoft consultant is running the show in Shanghai with about 10 employees.
None of the classfied ad-specific sites are charging for anything, including kijiji China.
China has a huge market for this category.
However, a standalone classified ad collection web site may not have much life as Chinese definitely read more newspapers (i.e. print version of classifieds) than Americans.
kijiji i have used this site and its realy user friendly.
Do you think they will wait until they have the monopoly like they did with ebay before they jack prices sky high?
Here is new classifieds site which has very easy parameterized search is available there. Khichdee is a famous Indian delicacy, containing a combination of various pulses, spices and curries. Khichdee.com is, in a way, a mixture of classifieds that have already been published either online or offline. These classifieds have been re-organized and parameterized into categories and are presented to viewers in an easy- to-search format. Khichdee.com is a site which has classifieds for cars, bikes, properties, matrimonials, jobs, Books & Magazines, Computers and much much more.
http://www.khichdee.com
I see a lot of talk about the new Ebay USA Classified site that just started up. But, no one seems to know its Web Address. You don't have it listed and neither does Ebay. Is it a pretend site? Jim
kijiji is a joke
Kijiji makes the user search for the type of ads he is looking for because the broad categories do not provide for auto search.
The overall look and feel of the site is badly done. With so much of information, the user gets confused as to which is the actual content he is looking for.
Kijiji has ramped up big time, however another site that could give it a run for its money could be khichdee.com, which has been featured as one of the top 30 non-US sites to watch out for by Web 2.0 magazine. http://www.khichdee.com
Classifieds market is getting hotter by the day in India. New sites have started well and showing good potential. http://www.clickindia.com/ was launched this year itself and has already garnered a good market share in the Indian classifieds market which can be seen through its improved rankings and number of ads being generated.
So kijiji has a lot to sweat about. It is a good competition and should benefit consumers/users in the end.
A site that is not pure classifieds but ads a glimpse into the future of interest based sub markets is www.iPoste.org.
They just went International and looks like India and the UK are the first to embrace this concept
Ebay is ending the selling of digital downloads at the end of May 08 (a great sign of technology and ebay going backwards) and have said that digital downloads may now only be sold in ebay classifieds at a listing fee of $9.95 per month but I can't find anything anywhere about how to actually list an item right now! Great work ebay! Just like the way you took away sellers rights to leave neg or neutral feedback to deadbeat buyers!
Tom is right; ebay is going backwards.
Funny how you can click on Help in ebay and search for "classifieds" and NOTHING comes up. And they have forced thousands of sellers of digital delivery items to go out of business or sell only via their "Classifieds".
sure kijiji is easy to use, but when you want to add a link there is no way of making it link to your homepage. That is where craigslist will reign....
LocalOrange.com
Kijiji pulled the ad with my link in one day, I put another in today. EBay is toast come May 1st.
I really like Kijij but there are some real good alternatives comming up that don't belong to ebay. Olx, vivastreet or www.locanto.in

It apppears that there are at least 5 classifieds sites for each city in Canada. And they are all well designed.Even a new and small local site as http://www.nortad.com/ is well designed as it deploys menus for ad posting and navigation
http://www.craigslist.org/ has been running for a long time and Ebay bought in to them. I would guess that ebay is using them for listing for this site and are just changing the looks
