Does Technology Make the Journalist?

Posted by: Rob Hof on March 04, 2005

Or unmake the journalist? That’s the upshot of a key preliminary ruling in Apple Computer’s lawsuit against several sites that revealed details about the company’s new products. Apple contends that the protections journalists have against revealing their sources don’t apply to the Web sites. The Electronic Freedom Foundation, which represents the sites, disagrees.

If the ruling ultimately stands, the effect could be perverse: Writers using new technologies such as the blogs wouldn’t have the same protections as people doing the very same thing in print or other traditional media. Clearly, that doesn’t make much sense, especially in a world in which technology is starting to destroy the line between media and their readers.
