Creating Software Without Software

Posted by: Rob Hof on March 15

Will we all be programmers before long? That’s the upshot of a presentation today at the Emerging Technology conference by Adam Gross, director of product marketing at Salesforce.com. He contends that there’s so much spare processing power, thanks to the relentless advance of Moore’s Law, that we can now spend it on hiding the ugly details of programming behind the pretty face of the Web. “Increasingly, Web sites themselves are becoming platform,” he says. “My MyYahoo is kind of an application. We can let a whole new class of users now create a whole new class of enterprise applications.”

Salesforce has been pushing this idea for a little while. I have a feeling this may be longer in coming for the masses. But it’s interesting that computing has advanced enough to put the power of programming into many more hands. As the theme of the conference indicates, there’s a lot more to come.

Where there is commoditization, the programmers move on to create higher value services beyond that commoditization. There will always be a place in the software ecology for another programmer.
