Flipping Out Indeed

Posted by: Chris Palmeri on July 30, 2007

The real estate boom on television has just about played out—witness E.W. Scripps, owner of HGTV, putting out an earnings warning last week. So it’s fitting I guess that the Bravo cable network has put out the most outrageous home show yet. It’s called “Flipping Out” and it debuts on July 31.

This is a reality show that follows an obsessive compulsive real estate investor Jeff Lewis (that’s him at left) through all the craziness that is the LA real estate biz. Lewis is the Boss from Hell, making his workers place water bottles in his fridge with the labels facing out for example. Or asking one to take his obviously terrified cat for an acupuncture treatment and then scolding him for going through with the procedure when the cat was upset.

Lewis is so over the top you just have to laugh when he tries to compliment his long-suffering assistant Jenni—a rapper and actress on the side—by telling her that there is “a reason why I’ve fired Chris six times and you only two or three.”

You should bring the show to the East Coast, ideally here in DC! We need more character in the city.

Well if that doesn't help our image, what else will?

Why can't mass media show positive stuff, or even quality shows?

Another reason why I am happy to have no TV at home.

The show does look hilarious. I am actually looking forward to be entertained and maybe pick up a trick or two. Or well, mostly being entertained. haha. But he does do great work, I love his interior. It looks very sharp and very buyer friendly. Although I don't know about the exact 6 inches from the left and from the right. I think too much obsession drives yourself & your staff crazy, especially on jobs. When I stage and we spend too much time just working on this one vignette staging, I usually just tell my assistants to move on!

This woman Tori from "Flipping Out" is not a typical psychic, she seems warm and genuine.

Oh please he's already 'losing money' so he sez,
he's annoying and unlikeable (apparently I guess that hasn't stopped Donald Trump), you can successfully flip with out being like this and he's an insult to gay folks, and folks with OCD and an advert for bad plastic surgery. As for his taste jeez it's nothing special just the usual 'model home' decor (ala Home Depot) granite countertops, crown moldings, stainless steel appliances (I kinda cringed when he ruined a nice MCM that the Dr. was slow in getting out of). I hope he goes belly up with the softening RE market, touting his WAY over priced properties that someone is fool enough to buy.

BusinessWeek editors Chris Palmeri, Prashant Gopal and Peter Coy chronicle the highs and lows of the housing and mortgage markets on their Hot Property blog. In print and online, the Hot Property team first wrote about the potential downside of lenders pushing riskier, "option ARM" mortgages and the rise in mortgage fraud back in 2005—well ahead of many other media outlets. In 2008, Hot Property bloggers finished #1 in a ranking of the world's top 100 "most powerful property people" by the British real estate website Global edge. Hot Property was named among the 25 most influential real estate blogs of 2007 by Inman News.
