Michael Mandel, chief economist at BusinessWeek, is one of the nation’s leading economic journalists. His groundbreaking stories on the New Economy in the 1990s won him the Gerald Loeb Award, the most prestigious prize in business and financial journalism. Mandel was named one of the top U.S. business journalists of the 20th century, and received the Economic Journalism Award from the Institute of Political Journalism, given to the writer “who has done the most to shape public opinion by giving the public a better understanding of economic theory and reality." Mandel holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, and taught at New York University's Stern School of Business before joining BusinessWeek in 1989. His 2000 book, The Coming Internet Depression, foretold the tech bust and the recession which followed. His latest book, Rational Exuberance: Silencing the Enemies of Growth and Why the Future Is Better than You Think, was published by HarperCollins in 2004.
