Buckley's Cough Syrup Tells It Like It Is. Are you listening striking transit workers?

Posted by: David Kiley on December 21, 2005

For weeks, I have been hearing these ads that stick in my head for Buckley’s cough syrup. “It Tastes Awful, And It Works,” go the radio ads, which go on about how nasty the stuff is to take or smell. It’s not the usual approach for cough medicine. But I can’t tell you what the heck Robitussin or Dimetapp are advertising these days.

The ads have been running in the New York area on AM radio the last several weeks, as the company is looking for growth South of the border. In Canada, it’s as well known as Robitussin is down here.

The effectiveness of the ad campaign made me think this morning that perhaps the currently loathed transit workers in New York who are on strike might take out some ads. Here’s the ad copy: “Okay, we know we are being a pain in the ass to millions of New Yorkers, but think of how much exercise you are getting walking from Brooklyn to Midtown. You shoould be paying us what your normally pay for health-club dues.”

I tried Buckleys. It works great. I have been using it since around November of 05. My grandmother gave it to me and i still continue to use it till this day. As a matter of fact I took some this morning.

I've never liked the Buckley's ads. Perhaps living in Canada , we've become desensitized to them. In my mind I always thought I could do a better cold ad. Most seem like a morticians ad (They know you'll come eventually),predictable and non creative.

Here's how I feel a cold ad should look. This is five minutes of hard work scaled down to 1:18 because I'm new to editing, and had to film myself off a tripod.

The ad is off beat but to the point analogizing the cold war. I tried to pitch this idea for five years but predictably no company would listen so I made one myself.

Here's a Buckley's spoof:

Hope you enjoy it! Give me your opinion if possible.

I LOVE BUCKLEYS. IT IS THE FASTEST WORKING SYRUP I HAVE EVER USED. I GET THE REAL CROOP COUGH AND IT HURTS MY THROAT SO BAD. BUT, MY PROBLEM IS I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND IT ANYWHERE HERE IN FLORIDA. AT LEAST IN MY COUNTY. I LIVE IN INVENESS, WHICH IS IN CITRUS COUNTY FLORIDA. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT STORES IN MY COUNTY CARRY IT? ALSO I KNOW IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE. DO YOU POSSIBLY HAVE ANY COUPONS FOR IT? I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I AM ON DISSABILITY AND A FIXED INCOME, BUT I REALLY NEED THIS COUGH SYRUP.
THANK YOU SO MUCH,

I used to buy my buckley's at Eckards. Now that CVS took over Eckards, they don't carry it.
The pharmacy ordered it from their supply place in Dallas, TX, but they don't carry it anymore.
I ordered some from a place in New Jersey, I think. But it is so expensive, plus shipping is horrible. I can't find any better cough Syrup, any where. Please tell me where i can get it.

Who invented Buckley's anyway ? Yes, it does taste awful, but it's not as awful as people say, but it does the job, I can vouch for it.

I have found two old bottles for Buckleys with the name engraved into the glass. One has this one the sides, and one on the front.

When were these bottles manufactured? I am interested in finding out the history behind these as I've never seen one with these markings.

I found Buckleys.....it is now available accross the US in Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS....in Florida I saw it at Publix.

I am so happy because this is the only cough medicine that works for me......."It tastes awful. And it works." But I don't need my cough syrup to taste like candy - I just need it to work.

What ever agency you are using for your promition should be fired. Has Buckleys lost their marbles- Your last series of adds are absolutely atrocious and repulsive. Bad enought that I am considering never to buy any of your products ever again - What possessed you to think that grossing people out is attractive. Where is the logic in this type of add? Is this the result of joining a mega-DRUG conglomerate?
Sincerely, never yours again!

Marketing geniuses! The radio ads recently starting playing here in Connecticut, and they are hysterical. Everybody talking about them. I just received an email from my sick daughter who is away at college. She asked me if I knew the name of the cough syrup that tastes like garbage bag leakage. I didn't, but a Goggle search brought me here to discover the name is Buckley's. I'd have to say their marketing campaign is working!

I LOVE the adds!! They are hilarious! I would rather a company tell me the truth about their product, then lie about it! If it tastes awful, then say so. I hate when company's put great taste on the bottle and it is anything but great tasting. So I say they should keep it up! Obviously it isn't deterring anyone from buying and trying the product. There are plenty of good things being said on here regarding Buckleys. If your not buying the product because the adds gross you out then you aren't looking for something that works anyway, you are looking for something that just sounds good! So Good Luck with that Lyne Burek.

I have been using buckley cough syrup
for years. It is too bad that you sold to a company who is reducing the amount
you get and charging more money for it.
from 8 ounce to 4 ounce. It hurts now that I am a senior and need it more than ever.

I bought Buckley's for the first time over the weekend and took the first dose without reading the label. Oh my!! The taste is horrible!!!! However, this is the BEST over the counter medicine for a cough I've ever had. I randomly found it at the supermarket Ralph's in Riverside, CA.

Carl

April 28, 2008 1:38 AM

I thought it looked strange, not "cherry" colored. Then I took it and thought the bottle was bad. Called the pharmacy and we checked the expiration date, it was good. Then I saw the logo, tastes bad but works. Great. Now on my 3rd dose and it does seem to be working.

GAWD this stuff is AWFUL! I've tasted bad tasting medicine in my life before, but NEVER this bad. It's like taking pure camphor. I don't need it to taste like candy either, but Lord, I could not take this stuff again. I wouldn't take it again if you paid me a million dollars. Yes it's that bad. I don't know if it works or not yet, but it about made me vomit.

I love the commenter who thinks they know what makes an effective ad. We are all in here talking about it, aren't we? Apparently QUITE effective. Wait, I have to go tend to a discussion board on Robitussin... or not. Anyway, yeah, it's positively mind-numbingly terrible tasting, but it's about the only thing that is working on my current cough. Just makes it all go away. Fantastic stuff, and it was on sale for $1.99 today with my CVS card! WHOO!

I am not saying it won't work, but should we be discouraged about the
ingredient that is in it? You know, the ammonia? I do take it, and it helps.
It smells like ammonia though.
Do we just ignore that little factor?
I paid for it on sale, so I take it myself, but I do not let me kids take it. It smells just like the ammonia that is in it.

I have been using Buckleys for roughly 30 years. Gawd what a taste. I have described it to folks as drinking something that tastes like a dog peed on a pine tree. (Buckleys contains ammonia and pine needle oil.) If you go to Buckleys.com you can see ads from years ago. I hate being misled by ads. The Buckleys ads are simple and tell the truth.
1) It tastes awful (sure does)
2) It works (better than anything else on the market)
So, ignore the ads if they annoy you; just try the product.

January 2, 2009 10:15 AM

CVS use to stock it as I got a bunch of it last year but now am out and can't find it anywhere. I did a search online and found this site where you can order it direct which is what I am going to have to do. This stuff is gawd awful tasting but it works like a charm and thats the ticket...http://www.brandsdirect-llc.com/index.htm

January 4, 2009 5:59 PM

I'm in SW Ohio. Our Walgreens has discontinued it, and CVS did not have it in stock, but the pharmacist at CVS is ordering it for me (Walgreens could not order it). Buckley's tastes like a cross between sweat and menthol, but it works better than anything I've ever tried before.

For those who are disturbed by particular ingredients, be sure you never get a flu shot, or any sort of vaccination either, as most of them use either ammonia or a mercury derivative as preservatives!
