Wyclef bails on Ning

Posted by: Douglas MacMillan on July 01

Celebrities can be a boon to social networking sites, but they can also be a liability if they become unhappy with a site.

Ning, the service that lets you create your own social network, is growing quick and attracting some big names. Author Seth Godin used the platform to start a private forum for marketing experts. Rapper 50 Cent has attracted such a following on his network, Thisis50.com, that other hip hop artists have started advertising on the site to find new fans.

On Wednesday, Wyclef Jean announced to his Twitter followers that he was abandoning Clef Zone, the Ning network that he only recently created. His specific objection to Ning is unclear (we have a call out to Wyclef, who for some reason posted his phone number on Twitter the same day), but he says on Twitter that “i want my own server” and “I wanna be in full control of my vision.” The performer also hints that he’s concerned about the security of internal messaging on the site, saying (sic) “I DONT TRUST A SOCIAL NETWORK WERE THEY HAVE YOUR EMAILS.”

Guess who responded? Ning CEO Gina Bianchini, who frequently gives her users personal attention — particularly the A-listers. Wyclef’s complaint and Gina’s response are below. I’ll update this post if I hear back from either party.

Update (2:15 PM Eastern): Looks like there’s no hard feelings between Wyclef and Ning…

And Ning spokeswoman Morgan Seal provides this statement:

We love when people experiment with Ning. Based on the tweets you reference, it looks like Wyclef and his team decided they wanted to develop a social networking application on their own servers with their own developers. While Ning provides an easy way to create and customize your own social network and gives Network Creators full access to member data and control of their content, we fully respect and understand that Ning may not be right for everyone.

@ Douglas MacMillan... Who cares.. there is more important news than what wyclef "tweets". I mean is there a point to this story even, or must you rely on Tweets for your content. Just another waste of bandwidth.

I created that site for Wyclef and his concerns were really unfounded, he did not have a full understanding of the Ning platform and the reason why he took it down was because he didn't create it I did. I did a broadcast on my whole experience with Wyclef I decided to talk about it because I am tired of celebrities getting a pass because they are famous, they are people just like me.You can listen to the broadcast at http://www.maritorres.com We should always speak up when things are not right.

Wyclef should just use www.socialgo.com -

Very good points

If you make the site yourself you get complete control. If I were to choose a social network creation solution I would choose socialgo over ning

The reason for this, is that with socialgo, you own all the data and are free to export it out whenever you choose. With ning, you don't get that option as you don't own your own data and they have removed the tools which allow you to export what you have created if you wish to take it elsewhere

I would be very very cautious before starting a network on Ning now.

I'm very suspicious of their intentions, and very scared that they will co-op my content and my users, and turn them into just another "interest group" on their own social network.

Ning promised almost a year ago that they would offer network creators a way to export their content (such methods used to exist, by the way, until they were banned by Ning). But there is nothing but dead silence from Ning on the issue now, and all queries on the matter meet with, you guessed it... dead silence.

Until Ning makes its intentions clear, I would advise everyone to wait it out, or look at hosting elgg (http://www.elgg.org).

Read THIS! There IS more to this story and it is about time some of the negative feelings towards Ning start to bubble up to the surface!

Reporters! Please just do a search over at Ning's customer (no)service site at http://www.getsatisfaction.com/ning you will find a legion of people who are VERY unhappy! Stop giving Bianchinni a pass it is a gross double standard and reverse sexism! If Zuckerberg had this much animosity coming at him from Facebook users ALL the publications in the world would be decrying "The death of Facebook!". Why you all (until this article) continue to turn a blind eye towards the Network Creator fiascco on Ning is beyond me.

Thank God someone has the guts to report this piece and thank you! However don't stop here! Dig a little deeper and you will find that this golden child of a company is really rife with users who are basically being held hostage because they would go if Ning would let them have their data. Ning has to know it is only a matter of time before all of you in the media finally catch on to the user dissatisfaction. I challenge any Journalist or Blogger reading this to get to the bottom of what is really going on at Ning! Will YOU be the one to break the story?

Mr. Frustrated is right. The NC's of the big original networks are all feeling duped and ignored by Ning. There is a great story there about bait-and-swith, and internet hostages. :-)
