My imposter is roaming Demo, in San Diego

Posted by: Stephen Baker on September 26, 2007

If you’re at Demo in San Diego and you see someone wearing a Stephen Baker, BusinessWeek, badge, IT’S NOT ME. I’m in New York. I hear from a couple of people that someone is not only traveling under my name, but saying that he’s me. And when pressed by people who know me, he says he’s the “other” Steve Baker at BW and that he knows me.

If you encounter this person, please tell him to do his business under someone else’s name, preferably his own. It’s hard enough being responsible for my own words and actions. I don’t want to have to shoulder his.

Wow, that's awful. Let's hope someone snaps a photo of this impostor for future reference. Actually, I'm surprised this type of thing doesn't happen more often. We're so concerned with identity theft online that I never stopped to think about identity theft in person. Good luck!

When I was at another conference recently, I was really pressed for proper identification, and I guess this is the reason why. The folks at Demo should know better.

This is Real Steve Wildstrom and I actually am at DEMOfall and can report that Fake Steve Baker has been dealt with. I had seen Steve Baker's name on the attendee list but had not seen Steve; I didn't pay this much mind because it's not unusual for media folks to register and then not come for one reason or another. But after Real Steve's post appeared, the conference folks found me. We quickly tracked down Fake Steve and I confirmed that while his name may or may not be Steve Baker, he most certainly was not the Steve Baker who writes for BusinessWeek.

Thanks Steve, and everyone else who helped on this. I just got a call from Darcy Provo of the Antenna Group. She and I have talked on the phone, but have never met. She said she greeted this other person and talked about blog posts I've written, including one about my father. He went along with it. I guess some would call that chutzpah.

You'd think with all the publicity, Dan would've realized the gag wouldn't work in person. :-)

I also saw Fake Stephen Baker (and real Steve Wildstrom) at Demo. I was even more confused because my brother's name is Stephen Baker. He borrowed $20 from me, so somebody owes me something.

I'm another Baker that was at Demo, but my name is Phil Baker. No relation to the real or fake Steve Baker! Never saw Steve Baker, but like the last poster did see Steve Wildstrom and he can vouch for me :)

The best post on this thread HAS to be Bill's. Hahaha...Hope you get your @20 from somebody! And no, this is not the real Dusty Baker...;-)

Having a doppelganger means you've made it. I'm jealous.

Thank you for your interest. This blog is no longer active.
