Web 2.0 Sites Make up 12% of Web traffic, up from 2% two years ago, says Hitwise

Hitwise put out some new data today showing that Web 2.0 sites (I didn’t use the term so don’t throw things at me) make up 12% of Web traffic, up from 2% two years ago. Here’s a link to the PDF of a full presentation. Download file

…they also had some interesting data on participation rates at popular sites that backs up, yet again, the point that only a small percentage of folks actually are participating.

The researcher also points to Yelp, StumbleUpon, imeem, Veoh, WeeWorld and Piczo as the next potential breakout Web 2.0 sites.

The reason why 2.0 Websites are thriving, especially Myspace.com is because it allows unimpeded free speech! Users are allowed to post what ever they want, and use what ever language they like, as long as it is not a commercial Website spamming itself!

So if one wants to use the "F" word, they can without any penalty, fear or reservation that their content will be censored and deleted or they user account will be suspended!

This is what drives Web 2.0

If we impose regulations and chastising on these creative users Web 2.0 will fail!

Before, incredibly popular Web communities like Lonelyplanet.com, Flyertalk.com, Bootsnall.com were open forums for creative writes with life experiences in the particular field! These contributors expressed themselves freely with impunity! Today the same Websites are being moderated by inexperienced, inept, and unknowledgeable folks who are doing their task of moderation just to hang out and crack jokes with each other; hence, supporting their existence of self inconfidence and jealousy!

It is a real shame and destruction of valuable intellectual property and valuable recourses like these Websites, their original founders who have started these communities and creative people who once contributed to them!

As a Webmaster and a Developer, I feel if we impose censorship and conformity on Websites like Myspace.com we will destroy these popular and dynamic Web communities!

The idea behind Web2 was a general and more democratic consensus building communities who self-regulate (to a greater extent as compared with old model) so the public itself decides or suggests the moderation part without being alienating by the opinion of some of the management team. This process is akin to many paradigms as well but overall freedom-of-speech and knowledge/information sharing at these websites is only growing with the growing rate of imperialism and steps to curb freedom of speech throughout the world. So, the whole phenomenon, in my opinion, is not just driven by social-needs and social-revolution but directly linked with political and traditional media hubs and issues.
