Check out the new video report from the hyperlocal blog Baristanet. It’s zanny, irreverant, fun. It’s not news, but its a comment on a topic that’s big in the burbs….leaf blowers.
Ok, so here’s my question. If, say, I did a video series like that, on subjects like that, would that be acceptable? My feeling. No. It doesn’t fit with the brand or what folks who read and comment and add to our stories expect. Maybe if it were more Jon Stewart-like, with a sharp tongued, humorous take on bigger news items it might fit. (No knock on Baristanet, but I would argue that Stewart wouldn’t do a leaf blower skit. He’d do a John Bolton resignation sketch.) We could probably do something like Wallstrip before we could do these lighthearted items.
So am I wrong? W0uld love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks,

First of all, Heather, if you undertake some sort of video endeavor, I hope you aim higher than the leaf blower bit on Baristanet. That was rather lame.
And Wallstrip: Andrew Baron from Rocketboom called. He wants his shtick back.
Whatever happens this weekend as far as opening numbers—I'm betting Happy Feet noses out Casino Royale—I will wager here and now that Happy Feet will wind up being one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. It is the definition of a holiday family crowd-pleaser and could rival Pixar's Cars. And it's a lighter-than-air "movie musical" in a way that Bill Condon's gravity-bound live-action musical "Dreamgirls" is not.
Heather, my feeling is yes. We try stuff, we learn, we see how it goes. As far as the brand goes, I think what we do has to be accurate and fair, tasteful (to a certain degree) and not nasty. I know that list eliminates lots of mouth-watering possibilities. But I think there would still be plenty of room for fun video. We'd have to recognize from the get-go that some of the efforts would flop, and that some would be criticized. But if we do 10 and 2 of them turn out to be winners, then we've learned a lot and have a template for stage two.
All this said, I won't be a player in this til I get back to the mag...
I was surprised to hear that Amanda is doing a comedy TV show on HBO while also acting as a journalist for ABC News.
p.s. Mike, I like that Wallstrip exists. If they just stick with it, it will keep getting better and better.
