This Week's Podcast with Etsy Founder

Posted by: Heather Green on December 13

This week’s BW Cutting Edge podcast is with Rob Kalin, co-founder of Etsy. He talks about how the online marketplace for craft goods is taking off. Kalin chalks it up to the Internet, whizzy Web 2.0 tools, the rise in craft-making, and consumers’ desire to know the artists behind the products

Feedback:

a) the podcast wasn't on iTunes when I first looked so I downloaded it; but then couldn't find it later. Why? The filename. A file named "podcastbiz_12_13_06" is so wrong it hurts. You guys need to BRAND your podcasts at every stage. So why not do everyone, including yourselves, a favor? Name them: "bw_podcast-xx_12_13_06" (with "xx" being blogspotting (bs), heather green (hg), stephen baker (sb), aso). It makes me happy bc I can find it quicker, and it turns the name into a (tiny) advertisement for your content.

b) that music is painful, imo. Sorry, but it reminds me of the music on my state-sponsored business infomercial that airs on Sunday latenights (might even be the same music). I'm guessing it's canned. That's just my impression, but imo no one should even notice it. If it were my podcast, I'd use non-music. And definitely no electric guitars.

c) while I appreciated the information, I would have liked to have heard a Conversation more than a Q & A session. You've a pleasant voice. You should use it. In particular, when you asked why you thought craft was gaining popularity, he gave a mostly Etsy-oriented answer to what seemed to be a broader question. He touched briefly on the broader aspects with his comment about the early printing press, but then didn't seem to connect that to what's happening today; he jumped back to Etsy. Understandable, but I wanted more. As I gave a marketing presentation back in 2000 predicting this trend, I would have very much enjoyed hearing him elaborate on that topic... beyond Etsy. He's in a good position to provide the kind of information I'd like to hear on the broader topic, as he's doubtlessly given it some thought. A more conversational approach might have gotten him to provide that kind of general information which might be of greater interest to a broader BlogSpotting audience.

That said, I do appreciate what you've done. Thank you.
