BW podcast on personal brand-building ignores blogs--and podcasts

Posted by: Stephen Baker on August 28

BW Exec Editor John Byrne launched a new podcast on career advice while I was on vacation. He interviews interviews Marshall Goldsmith, an executive coach. It’s slickly produced and worth a listen. Goldsmith says that we should all establish a strategy, a personal brand identity and a personal mission succinct enough to fit on a tee-shirt. (If any of you would like to leave your tee-shirt missions in comments, feel free.)

Byrne quotes Peter Drucker, who says that the traditional corporate ladders are gone. Now “it’s more like vines, and you bring your own machete.” I picture hacking someone else’s vine with the machete, and my foe falling far below into a piranha-infested river. Goldsmith, however, counsels us to befriend competitors and turn them into allies. So what’s the machete for, cleaning our teeth?

In any case, I listened to all 18 minutes waiting for John to suggest that more of us follow his path and launch podcasts. Or blog. Not a word. But this is a series, and I’ve no doubt he’ll cover it in future podcasts.
