It's not a Language Podcast, It's Entertainment

Posted by: Heather Green on June 20

A few months before heading off to Italy for vacation, my boyfriend and I started listening to Learnitalianpod.com to, well, learn Italian. It was more of an experience than I anticipated. Maybe that’s because when you spend time listening to someone chatting in your ears, they somehow become a little bit of a part of your life. And I think that’s even truer with podcasts than with other radio shows because the tone usually is more intimate.

First off, Learnitalianpod.com was useful. It cleared the fog for how the language worked. And it was entertaining. Because we were listening separately, as an inside joke when my boyfriend and I talked about learning Italian, we would use English with the Italian accents and phrases used by the people, Jane and Massimo, who produced the show.

Finally and unexpectedly, it was dramatic. Midway through our lessons, Jane left to go back to Italy. And that brought Angela as a replacement. Was she Massimo’s girlfriend? Was she Italian? Was Jane coming back?

All that, for free.

Not quite as dramatic, but very entertaining and very educational too (I love how they include the notes so you can see what you're listening to): japanesepod101.com.

This is a great web site! I listen to it all the time, and it has helped me immensely in improving my Italian, especially listening comprehension. Anyone looking to start learning Italian would do well with this site. You can even listen to the podcasts through Itunes as an RSS feed.
