A law against MySpace in schools could backfire

Posted by: Stephen Baker on May 12

OK, it makes sense to try to keep cyber creeps out of schools, but a law banning social network sites? That could keep out even Yahoo and Google.

UPDATE. By the way, sorry that we’re not processing comments today. Heather’s out of computer range, and with my remote set-up on the Ecto application, I have no access to comments.

It seems to me nothing is going to make kids rush to myspace and think it's cool than to "forbid it". If they were serious about driving kids away just start having stuffy senators and congressmen set up profiles and go out looking for friends. "Thanks for the add from Senator John Smith"

Great article... I've been facilitating a blog discussion on the PBS website among a group of librarians and teachers, and they are not pleased....

The main problem here is UNDER AGE USERS. The minimum age should be EIGHTEEN. Proof should be required just like many porn sites do---after all, myspace is a big porn site. In fact, its even worse. Its a site for predation, prostitution, how to beat up you classmates, etc.

This site is the ultimate access to filth and should be taken down or have filters in place. When anything illegal or highly objectionable is loaded into their computers, it should be blanked out or the persons site dismantled.

Myspace is a fine place for everyone to hang out. Like someone said before if you have a Myspace keep it private. Dont talk to strangers. and if you befriend a stranger and get hurt its your own fault not Myspaces.

The Problem is that all these under age kids have all these pictures of them half naked and like the fact that people are telling them there hot! so little 12 yr. old girls should really stop lying about there age and cover them selves up!!! as well as anyone else! its a place to chat and have pretty layouts! not hook - up!!!!!!

Myspace lies about deleting minors. If you see a minor that is lying about there age. When you report this minor to myspace they will not remove the profile unless the profile states the real age of the user. So if someone underage states that they are older and does not state there real age in the profile, myspace will not remove the profile.

Just as profiles that are links to porn sites. If you report such profiles to myspace they will not remove the profile and they will send you a notice from myspace that the profile has been removed when if fact they do not remove the porn related profile.

Ok I am 16 years old..

Glad we got that outta the way. Do you actually think that myspace allows such content to be posted on its site. Granted, not all profiles with such content are deleted because there are too many of them but if you have noticed (for those who do use myspace) that tom has been leaving his messages about how their cracking down on big spammers.

Myspace truly is a place for friends and its the pervy adults that ruin it for us all creating fake kid accounts.

ok so i am 13 year old. and i do have a myspace. i honsetly don't see anything wrong with myspace. i use it to talk to friends and have pretty layouts. but for the people who give out all their info are frickin stupid. and the people who talk to anyone who says their hot and add them really shouldnt. so just be safe on myspace.

I'm 23... not the biggest fan of myspace... I'm more so a fan of facebook, and I think that allowing kids to have facebook profiles is the better way to go. Facebook has more security, and you set the permissions for information on an individual basis. So some of my friends can see my address phone number, etc... and some of them can't.

Either way, myspace has led a social networking revolution, and to say that myspace is to blame, is the same as saying the internet is to blame. Myspace is an open community, and PARENTS should teach THEIR kids about the dangers of talking to strangers, giving out info....etc. It's not society's job to teach your children how to protect themselves from predators. It's society's job to find the predators and remove them. It's the PARENTS JOB TO EDUCATE THEIR CHILDREN.

SO.... instead of spending your time as parents whining about myspace, and trying to change things... spend the time making your kids smarter, and then you won't have to worry about it.

Fair Enough?

Kids don't be stupid. I've seen some objectionable content that would make you run from My Space. You haven't run into these individuals. I've seen young children on a hard core pornographic My Space being advertised. The individual would advertise to add this girl or guy. Then a person would go to the profile and it would clearly state the individual was under 18. Kids how would you like to end up on this perverts my space site hit list? BE CAREFUL!

Okay first of all just having your myspace private doesn't do anything. hello, i'm 13
and i could get past that if i wanted. myspace
was made crappy. why do you think everything
is down all the time? the creeps on there are
smart (usually?) and all they need is your ip
address to find out everything about you.
private profile or not.

i think that kids should have the freedom to go on to myspace and talk to there friends and if you let them then theyll move on for a while and soon people will stop going to myspace.com so Shut up and let them have some freedom.

Myspace needs to be sued for not attending the minor reports that are sent to them. I made a minor report,i know the kid and sent them the information about her profile and then she still had her profile after a month. The funny thing, is, that she has her own picture and anyone can obviously see that she is not 45 but 10. Her friend has 1000 for her age. It is unbelieveable to me, and Tom has to fix his security system or i'm willing to sue him(Myspace).

Kids are kids. They are taught (or are supposed to be taught) not to speak to people they don't know, or ADD people they don't know. A private profile is also recommended for those who are underage. Tom is only one person--he can't just wipe out everyone and everything that is making MySpace dangerous. Kids should only have MySpace if they are responsible enough and smart enough to keep their information private, not get into any chatting rooms with people they don't know, and NEVER meet someone they "know" online in person.
But that's just my opinion. Others may say differently, like some say that the minimum age for online profiles should be 18. Still, I disagree with this...

myspace gives kids and older people something to do i think that it is a good thing to have an account because say you live in one state then you move to another that would be a good connection source for people to stay in contact with each other..!

Why is myspace important to most teenagers?

deanna

June 26, 2008 01:33 PM

Myspace is a cult that lures kids and some adults to believe in disturbing trends. Most schools don't know that the kids are setting up the myspaces at school, so parents don't know.
Myspace is for loosers who can't meet friends in person and they want to hide behide a computer so people don't really see them for who they are. Myspace puts mini advertisements on people's myspace that is not appropriate for all ages to see. Most of the people on myspace are social outcast and don't have a life.

Look at www.saywire.com
Its a safe, secure, social academic network for schools and I think its a wonderful idea.
I finally have peace of mind knowing my kids are protected during and after school socializing/networking with their friends.
I have been waiting for something like this a long time.

Thank You Saywire!

although you can set your profile to private, colleges and companies have access to your personal page. thas how they can evaulate you adding to the interview often times kids who have tings on their pages like drinkin under the age, or doing dumb shit often miss out on good jobs

I think 12 year old should be able to have a myspace but keep it privet. If there under age to make sure there parants know give myspace there parants email address. Put all hte under age myspacers on privet and if they want a frind they need there myspace name and email.

Myspace isn't bad, but if you're perverted like almost every teenager out there, then it could be bad.
