Should Dan Gillmor have blogged the travails of Bayosphere

Posted by: Stephen Baker on January 25

Dave Winer asks if Dan Gillmor should have blogged the troubles at Bayosphere. The risk? In writing about failings, perhaps he’d be closer to accepting failure. But Winer writes:

I’ve learned, through both successful and failed startups that the only times I’ve been successful was when I couldn’t visualize failure.

In the spirit of the blogsphere that he was working in, probably.
I wonder though if his left-wing political rants on his old tech blog had any effect. I know that I unsubscribed and didn't follow him over to Bayosphere. Loved his tech writing, hated the vitrol-laced politics. I notice his older/wiser brother Steve doesn't intermix his political views with his tech writings or PodCasts. Just a thought ;-)

I too loved Dan's tech writing and Dan's writing in general - except when he goes to politics.

I thought his on the failure of Bayosphere redeemed him from a lot of his political rants. It was exceedingly well done.

What I've seen among people who've spent any amount of time in the newspaper business, especially those like Dan who've been good at it, is an arrogance that defies description when it touches on how people should communicate and on what's an acceptble view.

My take is that Dan's rants surfaced the real Dan, i.e. someone who wants to jump into the conversation when it's well under way, with no real prior involvement in it other than as a pundit, and tell everyone how they should conduct it.
