Florida superintendent blogs and gets hundreds of comments

Posted by: Stephen Baker on December 05

Thanks to Julie, in comments, for pointing to a superintendent’s blog in Florida. Clayton Wilcox, superintendent of Piniellas County Schools, uses the blog to get the word out—and to get feedback. On one post, I see, he got 600 comments. He swears he reads them all, but adds:

Please know that I am reading all of the posts and emails that you are sending me … thanks … I think … and to those of you who are posting and then emailing me with the post … you can stop … really … Clayton

I wish our superintendent in Montclair, NJ, had a blog like this. Also, it’s worth noting that the St. Petersburg Times hosts the blog. One more way for newspapers to extend their franchise and relevance online, and to serve their communities. They offer other high school blogs. One is by a 17-year-old preparing to head off to college.

Blogging seems to be catching on in public school systems. A lot of the trouble getting started is from a lack of publicity, and a newspaper can certainly help!

We've been blogging (http://communityhigh.org) to some extent since 1998 on our student-run site and we've built a platform (http://arborspeech.org) for anyone local who wants to join. I know of at least one other school (http://www.qohs.org/) who has started this.

Today I had a run in with the superintendent of schools when my son had a problem at Mosley High School. I don"t know if any of the rest of the parents who send there kids to school in Bay County have ever met him but I came to the conclusion that he is one of the most arrogant, obnoxious, buttwipes that I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. He tried to treat me like I really should have cared who he was and when I did not, he flew into a rage and started yelling and screaming. He even threatened me with arrest because I was trying to leave and he blocked my way causing me to bump him.
I am not sure about the rest of you but this kind of behavior in a man who has control over our children 8 hours a day seems quite sketchy to me. I was taught that to get respect you had to give respect, something that this "man" does not seem to understand. Just because you have a title does not mean that you can treat the people that you are supposed to be helping like some kind of second class citizens. When I told the administrators that I was going to file a complaint, his response was, "Go ahead. I am the superintendent and it will come to me." Does this sound like a good superintendent to any of you. I was at the point of pulling my son from the school system and homeschooling him.Fortunately, husfelt has very good people working in his office and they showed me that I should not disrupt my sons schooling because of this incident.
I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar problem with husfelt. After meeting and dealing with husfelt, I can't believe that I am the only one that has a problem with this clown. I really can't see how a man like him got elected, but lets see if we can correct that mistake by election time and show husfelt that he is a PUBLIC servant and that WE as parents are the PUBLIC that he serves.
Again, I would like any feedback from other parents out there that are concerned for the welfare of the kids who go to school in Bay County. I mean if he treats a parent who is trying to look out for his children like he did me, how good of a school superintendent is he???? NOT GOOD AT ALL BY MY STANDARDS!!!!
Please!!!! If any of you hard working parents agree, or even disagree, let me know so I can make an informed judgement as to whether or not I want to keep my son in a school system that is run by someone like husfelt!!!!!
