As Gillmor moves, what happens to Bayosphere?

Posted by: Stephen Baker on December 21

My colleague and editor Peter Elstrom just got back from Korea, where he met with the editors of OhMyNews, the citizen’s media sensation. He asked me why citizen’s media wasn’t taking off around here. I didn’t have an answer.

Then today I see news that Dan Gillmor is helping to start a nonprofit Center for Citizen’s Media at Berkeley and Harvard. (Thanks Micropersuasion) But a couple of the posts that accompany his own announcement make it sound as though he’s “moving on” from Bayosphere, his citizen media start up in the Bay Area. If that’s true, wither Bayosphere? Looks like most of the posts on the site are by Gillmor himself. What does OhMyNews have that Bayosphere lacks?

Being a journalist at heart, I've blogged about and have kept an eye on OhMyNews. It is definitely a ground-breaking site.
But, maybe we shouldn't look at "What does OhMyNews have that Bayosphere lacks?"
Rather, we should look at the differences in society and culture between South Korea and the U.S.
Are Koreans more technically-aware and have a greater use of camera 'phones, digital cameras and other "tools" to make citizen journalism easier for the average person?
Or, maybe the history and tradition of media in the U.S. is greater than in Korea? We are used to individual freedoms, such as writing letters to the editor. So the novelty or the ability of one person to make an impact -- such as reporting news -- is a culturally newer and a bigger deal in Korea than in the U.S.
Though there can be inherent problems with citJ sites, I am glad to see more and more popping up in the U.S. Orato is one, along with Pegasus News (Dallas) and Backfence.com.
