2006 prediction: Microsoft will buy Technorati

Posted by: Stephen Baker on December 23

I see an unconfirmed report that Microsoft is buying Opera, the Norweigian browser company. (I finagled a trip to Oslo once to write a story about the company.) This would give Microsoft a solid position in browsers for mobile devices, a market it’s been targeting since the late ’90s.

This news reminded me that I promised to come up with predictions for 2006. For now, I only have one: Microsoft will buy Technorati.

Just six months ago, Technorati seemed to be on the path to irrelevance. It was struggling to keep up with the growth of blogs. Service was lagging, and Google was crashing into the market. Icerocket looked promising. But now I’m finding Technorati more and more useful, and the company keeps adding new features.

All of this should drive up its value in the market. But I’m betting Microsoft will find the financing somewhere. Your thoughts?

Why technorati in particular and not icerocket or any of the others?

Sorry, I hit send before I completed the thought. Technorati has been adding more features, but I find it still has a distinct lag, especially when updating it's ping feature. Icerocket actually turns up better results and it updates faster. If that's due to a lower number of users, then Technorati makes sense but users will go where the service is, no?

Microsoft certainly has the money to buy several small countries if it wants (kidding). But why wouldn't Microsoft just try building its own blog search engine, a la Google or (rumor has it) Yahoo?

Niti mentions IceRocket as a significant contender to Technorati. I don't see it that way - just check out the Alexa traffic comparison for those two engines. Well, let me rephrase that - IceRocket is definitely an excellent blog search tool, but Technorati is easily the most popular one.

Well, maybe I'm wrong about these points. But I'm comforted by two things: 1) this is a predictions page, so we get more leeway, and 2) there's always someone around to teach me something I don't know!

Technorati has a lot more momentum behind it. E.g. The Performancing plugin for Firefox supports Technorati tags, and there are many more bookmarklets, etc for Technorati than for Icerocket. Of course, technology is fickle and this could turn completely upside down next year.

I still don't understand what Microsoft would gain from a Technorati purchase other than integration into Vista or some sort of search. Google has its own blog search, so to me Yahoo would be a more viable candidate to acquire Technorati

I think Technorati must get bought, but Yahoo seems to be the one on an acquisition binge, and they sure do like tagging companies. Stephen, I'll bet you a dollar its Yahoo, not MS?

Technorati being bought by a major player is good news!! I get tons of traffic to my blog but cant use my affilliate links because its not supported. No response to several emails to its technical support. Followers of my instructional blog would love to be able to buy books I recommend by a direct link to it on Amazon but cant, and without some revenue for myself the future of my popular free service depends entirely on routing followers to my ebay shop to buy the items they need to follow my course. I hope that if a purchase of technorati happens the owners will look to this requirement.

I think Microsoft has tougher battle to win from Google than to buy blogsearch based website. I have been hearing since long that MS is coming with killer search engine. But till date, my wait is not over. They really got to fight out the battle of better search engine, leave alone, blogsearch which Google has already searched.

As far as Technorati acquisition is concerned, well, I do not think Yahoo/MS will be thinking about it soon. They have search technology in place so they could as well apply it to blogsearch, probably similar to Google. But, you never know, as everything is fare in love, so is in business.:)

I'll bet you both your dollars that nobody buys it.

Why Charlie? Because nobody wants Technorati, or because Technorati won't sell?

Obviously the tip I got back in August, http://www.whatsnextblog.com/archives/2005/08/technorati_abou.asp that technorati was about to be sold, wasn't so hot. But I believe it makes great sense for acquisiton-happy Yahoo! to buy Technorati.

Yahoo! seems to really get social media, and they could apply their considerable resources to fix Technorati's many snags. Technorati's new tools are great ideas, but many are half-baked and don't work too well. THey could use some help!

Why Microsoft will buy Technorati ? But i think there is a greate reason behind that.

thanks

I think that that is very improbable. First of all, Microsoft would not cope with Google, which is the first on the market of search. I'm sure, that Google will develop other services which will be an alternative of Technorati.
