A six-figure blogger

Posted by: Stephen Baker on September 01

Darren Rowse, author of the Problogger site, announces that he’s earned $100,000 in the last 12 months blogging. Two questions for Darren, who runs a stable of blogs: How many hours do you work per day? And have the most recent six months been richer than the previous ones? I’d imagine they have, and that he’s operating on a higher run rate than $100k.

Jeremy Wright frets that Problogger wannabes will quit their jobs to follow Rowse’s money trail—and then fail.

Lots of people try new businesses and fail in the sense of it not working. That's nothing to fret about.

But I think Problogger is an example of what we've long seen in the writing biz. A lot of the people making real money in writing are those producing products that tell other people how to build writing careers.

Where are the lists of the top paid bloggers?
If one guy is making a 100K, I'm sure there are others. If this works for one person, I'm certain there are others.

I read that Google doesn't advertise to promote its own brand and services. Google is smart. I don't advertise myself! All you need is love Steve. What a merry go round. The world is flat. Maybe Business Week needs to start a Bubblespotting Blog. Just fake IT!

Based on what I read off of Daren's site, he is now running a "Six Figure Blogger" like course / consultancy. I think such a venture is a bit risky.

Maybe I am being too skeptical but I think tips and tricks to become a successful blogger just will not work.

Why?

Two key elements - sujbect matter expertise and writing skills. You can't teach either. Without either you won't be a successful blogger.

Blogging is no more than an extension of search engine optmization and direct marketing work. Problogger is doing what lots of people have been doing since affiliate advertising took off. There are many businesses that make far more money than him.

I don't think it's wise to advertise yourself the way that he does. From what I've seen of his 'blogs' he maintains problogger.net the best, though I doubt that site makes more than $10 a day.

Darren is an experienced writer. Not everyone could make money from blogging - you've got to enjoy writing and enjoy your topic enough not to run out of steam.

The majority of wannabee six figure bloggers will give up after the first few posts.
