Wiki proposal: Cell phone directory

Posted by: Stephen Baker on July 26, 2005

How about a Wiki that lists cell-phone numbers (for all who want to be included)? Our colleague Peter Elstrom (below) offers the idea. To avoid telemarketers or spammers, he proposes that members register for the service. The Wiki, he says, would feature a search box, and the system would record which member asked for each number. Only one search at a time.

I don’t think I’d be a charter member of this group. Let the Elstroms of the world iron out the kinks, and maybe I’ll follow. You? (I just did a Technorati search on this subject. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that there appear to be gobs of spam blogs on cell-phone service.)

I wonder why a wiki would be the right app for this idea ... this is more passive listing/ lookup than collaboration, which is where wikis shine.

How about just signing up for Plaxo? :-)

Hmm. I think we ironed out most of the problems a long time back - 'last millennium' in fact. MobilePhoneNumber.com is the worlds largest online cell phone directory - not marketing hogwash but fact. Check it for yourself. The only question is why do people want to re-invent what's already there and not broken? Saddly, this is one area where proliferation is really damaging; if you want to find someone in a directory, you want them to be in it (or opted out of), and not have to check zillions of copies. Then (it's suggested?) we start checking the wikis and the blogs too? Not on my watch! A cell phone directory isn't like any other search engine. You want your friends number, not serendipity.

I do not see the reason to be on the list. What for? There are a lot of match making sites. Do not see difference. And on top of that there is ICQ.

Well, I have the ENTIRE U.S. Cell phone number list with their respective carrier. I do not have any personal contact information. Simply an accurate database of every cell phone number and the carrier which "owns" that number. This could be used as the base which other people could "wiki" or add information etc...

I dont think it's a good idea, putting up numbers, what if people start abusing the service.

There should be some sort of Security or antispamming framework built first?

Thoughts?

This sounds like a pretty good idea. i think it'd go great with a unlocked cell phone. u can switch between carriers and use the phone over sea's and not be worried about anything.

I think it's an excellent idea so long as we can keep it out of the hands of telemarketers.

I'll be interested in seeing if this actually happens. It would be a fantastic idea. There's already a tremendous amount of demand especially since so many people no longer even have home phones.

I can see something like this get really abused. I'm not one to participate.

What about those cell numbers that aren't included in a wiki-style directory? How will those be searched?

It took years to establish the Do-Not-Call List, now the idea of providing easily-accessibly phone numbers free of charge is emerging. I could not support this idea.

Please! Please someone call me. I need attention, and that is why I left my phone number before. 510-688-2784

Anyway, I do not think it's a good idea for people's numbers to be all over the place. If I didn't personally give you my phone number myself then you shouldn't be calling it! Period.

actually, there already is one - it's called blackbook mobile. it's socially networked, and only allows friends (found between one degree of separation) to exchange numbers. of course, you have to sign up, but it's free, backs up your address book and allows users to send free text messages.

I checked out this so called Blackbookmobile.com. I say nicely done! It was refreshing to finally find a directory that I felt secure posting my cell number to.
