Looking for bloggers: the prereqs

Posted by: Stephen Baker on July 26

Ensight, a business and technology blog, is looking for bloggers. (from Problogger)I was interested to see the qualifications. They’re looking for people with proven ability to crank out opinionated, witty and controversial posts. It makes sense. That’s what gets read and generates buzz. But it also shows how much things have changed. A generation ago, people starting out in the news business had to bury their opinions, avoid controversy and keep a lid on their humor. News was not about self-expression. These days, from TV to the blogs, that’s changing.

Steven-

I agree with you about the trend, and I fear it's not transient. Entertainment is okay if that's how it's labeled. It'd be great if news was news, though.

Lots of acclaimed journalists have written with an edge, but at the same time also have been spot-on communicating in general terms with the general reader about what they've seen and heard. As a reader, that combination is what can make their stuff pop off the page. I guess it's always been work to find the really good writers. We probably just need to look different places now.

Has the world changed so much? Opinions used to be based on experience and not speculation, wit reflected a sharp mind used to discern truth in the middle of illusion and controversy was the opposing points of views on things that mattered.

The only way to be heard is to stand-up and say it. Otherwise, someone else will, and their words will not show-case as well as yours.
