Got Ringtones? Wireless Data Sales Surge

U.S. mobile-phone subscribers are using their handsets to play games, download ringtones and send text messages at an accelerating pace. That's music to the ears of wireless service providers such as Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless, which are eager for a return on the billions of dollars spent on network upgrades. Sales of wireless data are rising at an average 72% a year. This year wireless data will make up $7.8 billion in revenue, or 6.3% of the total wireless sales. And that contribution will only gain in the coming years as providers beef up existing services and add new ones, including mobile video and music downloading. By 2009, wireless data will account for $24.3 billion, or a respectable 16.5% of the total.
