Motorola: At Least It's Gaining Share

There's little to crow about at cell-phone maker Motorola lately. The shares are off, fourth-quarter profit was down and sales of the KRZR, successor to the RAZR, disappointed investors. Billionaire rabble-rouser Carl Icahn is itching for a board seat and Ron Garriques, head of Motorola's handset division, just jumped ship for Dell.

But there's a glimmer of good news. Motorola and its larger rival Nokia of Finland are gaining market share at the expense of the next-largest handset manufacturers, Samsung and LG, according to In-Stat. Motorola's share of the worldwide handset market widened to 21.9% in the fourth quarter from 18.5% a year earlier, while Nokia's grew to 35.1% from 34.7%.

Nokia and Motorola aren't gaining at the expense of all the smaller players, though. Sony Ericsson, which has set a goal of becoming one of the top three mobile phone makers in five years, also nabbed share last quarter.
