By Stephen H. Wildstrom Searching for a Search Tool Many readers had trouble finding Yahoo's free X1 offering, which was mentioned in a previous BW story. Here's where to find it Q: Numerous readers have written to say they have been unable to find the free Yahoo! (YHOO ) version of the X1 search tool mentioned in a recent Technology & You column (see BW Online, 4/28/05, "Tiger Makes the Mac's Edge Even Sharper"). Where can it be found? A: Yahoo doesn't go out of its way to make it easy to find, but you can download a free version of Yahoo! Desktop Search at desktop.yahoo.com. Officially, this is a beta, or test, version of X1 created for Yahoo. But I have found it every bit as good as the version of the program that X1 sells for $75. With Microsoft (MSFT ) and Google (GOOG ) both offering similar tools free, and search now built into Apple's (AAPL ) Mac OS X, free definitely seems to be the future of desktop search.
